What have you learnt about the sun, the the earth and the moon so far?

AIM 

To find out how day and night happen? 

METERIALS

Globe , a steel rod and arrangement for lighting a bulb 

PROCEDURE

 Remove the globe's stand. Arrange the bulb on the steel rod and hold it horizontally in such a way that the north pole should be towards the north. Light the bulb after ensuring maximum darkness in the room. Gently turn globe to the left. 

OBSERVATION 

While turning the glob, dark portion enters to the lighted area and the lighted are moves in to the dark area. 

INFERENCE

The earth spins from west to east. It is due to the earth's rotation that day and night continuously appear.

Sunrise - When the white bindi moves from darkness to the white

Noon - When the white bindi comes directly under the bulb 

Sun set - When the white bindi moves from light to darkness.

INFERENCES   

* With respect to earth , sun always remain in the same position 

* Due to the rotation of earth , We feel sunrise, noon and sunset.

Why the position of moon changes every day 

The position of the moon appears to change because of the revolution of the moon around the earth. Moon completes one revolution around the earth in 27  13 days.

* Is it possible to see the moon when it reaches the position marked 1?

No, because the lighted face of moon is not at all facing earth.

* What change occurs in the appearance of the moon when it comes to the position marked 2 ?

A small part of it's lighted portion will be seen from the earth .

* In which position do you see the full moon?

*In which position do you see the half moon?

Why we see always the same face of the moon 

The moon completes a revolution around the earth in 27 3/1 days. It takes the same time to complete one rotation as well. The is why one face of the moon appears in the direction of the earth always.
